2005 To Around 2009
Cars carrying the CAS2, CAS3 or CAS3+ module, built between about 2005 and 2009, will normally accept a new key straight through the OBD socket. They're the quickest BMW jobs we do.
After 2009, And The F-Series
Later cars, and the F-series that followed with their CAS4, FEM and BDC modules, need the module read on the bench, in a stable setup, before the key can be made. It takes longer, but it's the safe way. Some locksmiths try a shortcut on these modules to save time, and when it goes wrong it can leave the car undriveable. We don't take that risk, and we've repaired modules that others damaged trying it.

The E-series cars, such as the older 1 and 3 Series and the X5, have a key that slots into the dash to recharge.
Once it stops holding charge and the car ignores it, the key itself has given out; there's no battery to change. The cure is a new key coded to the car, made where it's parked.
