One Volkswagen fault comes up more than any other.
On the Golf Mk5 and Mk6, the Touran, and their Skoda, SEAT and Audi siblings, a small retaining section inside the ignition and steering lock grows brittle with age. Turning the key hard while the steering is still under strain eventually snaps it, and the whole lock jams. The broken piece is part of the lock's own casting, so the unit has to be replaced rather than repaired, and we do that at the car. Easing the wheel before turning the key helps it last.

Most Volkswagens use a flip key.
Polos and Golfs of the last twenty years nearly all do, and worn flip mechanisms are a common, fixable fault. Higher-spec models add keyless entry and start, called KESSY on a VW, and that's coded in at the same time so walk-up entry and button start work as before.

From about 2013, Volkswagen, Skoda and SEAT moved to a common platform, and a full set of lost keys stopped being a one-module job.
The car's security now lives across the instrument cluster, the engine computer and, depending on spec, the gearbox and steering lock, and each has to give up its share of the password before a key can be made. The simplest case is a manual diesel with an analogue dash. Add a DSG gearbox, keyless start or an all-digital cluster and there's more to read, with some digital clusters putting up a real fight. We handle these at the car up to roughly 2018; later cars take spares, sometimes by a longer route depending on their cluster, but are dealer-only once every key is gone.

Most of the range, cars and vans.
That includes the Golf, the Polo, the Tiguan, Passat, Touran and up! and the Transporter van. We have local pages for VW keys in Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester, and the Audi side of the family is on our Audi page.

What a Volkswagen key costs rests on the model, its age and whether you've a key that still works.
Copying a working key is cheapest; a post-2013 car with nothing left costs more because of the extra modules. The reg gets you a firm figure before we drive out, there's no deposit, and any change is agreed first. Larger jobs need diagnosing in person, so a call-out charge covers getting to the root of it.

Your questions
That varies with the model, its year and whether any key survives. A spare costs least, while a newer car with no keys left needs more work. Across Hampshire, East Dorset and South Wiltshire, you get a fixed price from your registration before we travel, and the key comes with a twelve-month guarantee.
On a Golf Mk5 or Mk6, it's very often the ignition and steering lock unit, where an internal part has turned brittle and snapped. The lock has to be replaced as a unit, which we do at the car. Try gently easing the steering wheel first, in case it's simply under strain.
We stick to Hampshire, East Dorset and South Wiltshire, since the work happens at your Volkswagen and long drives help nobody. If you're elsewhere, a mobile locksmith near you can handle Volkswagen car key replacement the same way and will reach you much faster.

What customers say
"I cannot recommend Alec enough. My transit custom lock was not turning. I did not know Alec at this point and called another locksmith. To cut a long story short the other locksmith attempted a repair and then gave up, leaving me with a van I could no longer use. I called Alec who came out next day; he repaired the damage done by the other locksmith and custom made a replacement ignition barrel so one key still does the doors and the new ignition. I couldn't be more pleased. Price was very fair too!"
"Did the work at a 3rd of the price of the dealership and I'm sure to a higher quality, the work was quick and professional. Could not recommend more!"
"Absolutely spot on! After ringing about 15 different companies who said they couldn't help and one company even saying the series of my car doesn't exist I found smarttech who I contacted who could finally help! The next day he came out and I now have access and a new key to my car! Fast and efficient polite service! Highly recommend!!"
