Diagnosis
Fault found before parts are fitted • Barrels for common models on board • 12-month guarantee • 450+ reviews
Four different faults look the same from the driver's seat, and each needs a different fix. Ignition lock repair in Winchester begins by telling them apart.
A key that won't go round is usually worn wafers in the barrel, a worn key, or the steering lock bearing on the barrel. A key that turns but brings no power points to the ignition switch behind the barrel. A key that won't come out is often wear, or an automatic not fully in park. And a push-button car that ignores the button can be an electronic steering lock, not a key at all.

Common faults
Honda, Ford and the Volkswagen group lead the way, with Vauxhall and Mercedes close behind, each for a different reason.
Honda ignition barrels are a known weak point across the range. Ford barrels wear in high-mileage Fiestas and Transits. Volkswagen group cars of the Mk5 and Mk6 Golf era share an ignition and steering lock unit that fails. The Corsa C snaps the tail behind its ignition. The Mercedes C-Class has an electronic steering lock that gives up, which we repair rather than send to the dealer.

Pricing
Ignition work is quoted over the phone once we have the reg and a description of what the key does. Rebuilding the barrel you've got is normally the least expensive route, a fresh barrel coded to the key you already use is next, and a barrel that arrives with its own keys, cut and programmed, costs most.
Nothing is paid upfront. Every price is given before anything is taken apart; if one symptom could be more than one fault, you hear each possible price on the phone first, then we confirm at the vehicle. Ignition lock repair in Winchester carries our 12-month guarantee.

FAQ
Because the wafers inside the barrel, or the cuts on the key, have worn enough that they only line up at one angle. It's a warning, not a quirk, and it gets worse until one morning the key won't turn at all. Caught at the jiggling stage, it's usually a rebuild rather than a replacement.
Usually, yes. Ignition barrel replacement in Winchester normally uses a barrel coded to the key you already have, which means the doors and the ignition still share a single key. New keys only come into it when the replacement barrel is supplied with its own, and we cut and program those before leaving.
No. Pulling or twisting harder is how keys snap, and the barrel releases by being worked, not by force. Check the gear selector is fully in park, turn the steering slightly, and try again gently. If it still won't release, ring us and leave it where it is.
Yes, just not with a barrel. They use an electronic steering lock and a start button module, and either can fail. The usual signs are a steering lock warning on the dash or a car that does nothing when you press start. The C-Class steering lock is the one we see most, and we repair it on site.
Most barrel jobs are done within the visit. Time depends mostly on how the steering column comes apart on your car. If a part isn't on the van, we'll say so on the day and book a return as soon as it arrives, rather than leaving you guessing.
Our work

Before you call
A couple of checks at the car might save you the call-out altogether.
Move the steering wheel slightly left and right while turning the key, because a locked column can grip the barrel. Check an automatic is properly in P. Next, try your spare key: if it turns smoothly, the original key has worn, and a new key cut to the factory code may be all you need.
Don't force the key, because a snapped key turns a repair into an extraction. Don't spray oil into the barrel: it frees things for a day, then collects grit and gums the wafers. And don't use a hammer or pliers on anything, however tempting it gets.
Across the city
It rarely happens somewhere convenient: the top floor of a city-centre multi-storey, a narrow lane in the Itchen valley, or a Kings Worthy driveway at 7am.
We come to the car wherever it stopped, whether that's in the city, out in the villages or over in New Alresford. The barrel is repaired or replaced there and then, so the car is driven away rather than towed.

What customers say
"I cannot recommend Alec enough. My transit custom lock was not turning. I did not know Alec at this point and called another locksmith. To cut a long story short the other locksmith attempted a repair and then gave up, leaving me with a van I could no longer use. I called Alec who came out next day; he repaired the damage done by the other locksmith and custom made a replacement ignition barrel so one key still does the doors and the new ignition. I couldn't be more pleased. Price was very fair too!"
"Did the work at a 3rd of the price of the dealership and I'm sure to a higher quality, the work was quick and professional. Could not recommend more!"
"Absolutely spot on! After ringing about 15 different companies who said they couldn't help and one company even saying the series of my car doesn't exist I found smarttech who I contacted who could finally help! The next day he came out and I now have access and a new key to my car! Fast and efficient polite service! Highly recommend!!"
