1 - Remain calm
Do not panic. It can be very easy to become overwhelmed by the idea of losing your car key and have the urge to panic first, think later. We get a lot of calls at SmartTech Auto Locksmiths of people who have lost their key and when asked how long they have looked for the key the response is for only 1 hour. If the vehicle is safely parked and there is no immediate security concern, taking time to retrace your steps can avoid an unnecessary replacement. You do not have to wait 1–2 days before asking for advice or a quote, especially if you are stranded, urgently need the vehicle or suspect the key was stolen.
2 - Social media can be a useful tool
In the search for your lost key, use the power of social media. We recommend looking on local neighbourhood groups and local dog walker pages to the town/area you lost your key and seeing if someone has picked it up. Oftentimes we hear stories of people finding keys and posting on facebook groups to see if the owners will respond to reclaim their car keys. Make sure to call every premises you were in and be patient to wait until they open if you went out to a nightclub or bar and are believed to have lost it there.
3 - Call an auto locksmith/car dealer for a quote
If a reasonable search has not found the key, or you need the vehicle sooner, enquire about a replacement. A suitably experienced mobile auto locksmith may be able to make a key at the vehicle and avoid recovery costs, depending on its make, model, year and security system. We also recommend asking the main dealer for a quote so you can compare the complete costs and expected waiting times. Savings vary; they are not guaranteed on every vehicle.

4 - Check whether you have added key cover on your insurance.
There are some key points to watch out for when it comes to key cover with insurance companies. Check whether your policy covers the actual car key, related locks, recovery and the circumstances in which it was lost. Read the excess, claim limits and any effect on your no-claims discount. These terms vary between insurers, so compare the full cost of claiming with a direct replacement quote before deciding.
5 - If all else fails, book a professional car locksmith
Once you have all the facts, book a professional car locksmith who has confirmed support for your specific vehicle and key system. A mobile workshop carries specialist tools and key stock, but not every car can be completed by every locksmith. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available, depending on workload and location. To discuss a booking with SmartTech Auto Locksmiths, call 07535 856 003 or request a quote with your registration and location.

6 - What you can do to prevent this from happening again
Once you have your new key, consider a large, brightly coloured keyring and a compatible Bluetooth tracking tag, such as an Apple AirTag or an alternative supported by your phone. These are not the same as standalone GPS trackers, and their usefulness depends on the device and network. Keeping a spare working key separately is another practical way to reduce disruption if the main key is lost again.
