An ignition that won't turn leaves the car exactly where it is, so ignition repair in Eastleigh comes to the car. We diagnose first, then rebuild or replace the barrel there and then, usually from parts already in the van.

Try this first
When the key won't turn in an Eastleigh driveway or car park, it isn't always a broken ignition. Two common causes cost nothing to rule out.
Turn the steering wheel a little each way while you turn the key, because a locked steering column can trap the barrel. On an automatic, check the selector is fully in park. Then try the spare: if it turns, the old key has worn down, not the barrel. Whatever happens, don't force it or spray oil into it. Both turn a repair into a replacement.

On site
Almost always. Ignition repair in Eastleigh is done at the kerb, on the drive or in the car park, and because we carry barrels for the models that fail most, the same-day fix is normal rather than lucky.
If your key won't turn in the ignition anywhere in Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford or Hedge End, we cover the whole of SO50, SO53 and SO30. Weekdays run until 10pm, weekends 10am to 6pm.

Ready for the road
The blade is cut to suit your vehicle's locks.
The transponder is paired with your immobiliser.
Lock, unlock and starting functions are checked before we finish.
Step by step
Not every stuck key needs a new barrel. The first job is proving which part has failed, because fitting the wrong part fixes nothing.
The key is checked against its original cuts, the barrel is tested for worn or seized wafers, and the ignition switch behind it is checked separately. A car that loses power with the key turned is usually the switch. A key that won't go round is the barrel or the key itself.
Ignition lock repair in Eastleigh comes first wherever the barrel can be saved: worn wafers are renewed and the barrel is recoded to your key. Ignition barrel replacement in Eastleigh is the fallback: a new barrel matched to your existing key, or, where it comes with its own keys, we cut and code those before leaving.
Local
Vans on site and family cars at home are where ignitions give up. When a car key gets stuck in the ignition in Eastleigh at 8am, it usually means a missed job or a missed school run, so tell us which and we'll plan around it.
Trade vans on jobs out towards Botley, hatchbacks in the Chandler's Ford estates and commuter cars around the town centre make up most of our ignition work. It all gets done where the vehicle stopped.

Pricing
We price ignition work on the phone from your registration and the symptom. Saving your existing barrel costs least, a new barrel matched to your current key costs more, and a barrel that comes with new programmed keys costs most.
There's no upfront payment. Every price is given before anything is taken apart; if one symptom could be more than one fault, you hear each possible price on the phone first, then we confirm at the vehicle. Every repair carries our 12-month warranty.

Common faults
Some models get through ignitions far quicker than others, and they're the ones we keep parts for.
The Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo are top of the list for trade vans. The Honda Jazz wears its barrel on bladed versions. The ignition and steering lock unit in the Golf Mk5 and Mk6 is the same part fitted to the Audi A3 of that era, the Skoda Octavia and the SEAT Leon, so they all fail the same way. The Mercedes C-Class has a different weak spot, its electronic steering lock, which we repair as well. Ford Fiestas and Transits are a steady call as well.

FAQ
Yes. We release it by working the wafers inside the barrel, never by levering on the key, so both come out intact. If the end has already snapped off inside, extraction tools bring it out. Then we find out why it jammed, because a key that sticks once tends to stick again, usually at a worse moment.
Don't rely on it. On the C-Class, the electronic steering lock fault tends to get worse until one day the key goes in, nothing turns and the steering stays locked. That usually happens somewhere inconvenient. We repair the unit on site, and getting it done before it fails completely saves a stranded car.
Usually not. When ignition lock repair in Eastleigh rebuilds your barrel or fits a new one coded to your key, the same key keeps working the doors and the ignition. New keys only come into it when a replacement barrel arrives with its own, and then we cut and program them before we go.
It can make it look that way. On some automatics, a weak battery stops the key being released. On a Corsa D, a flat battery can knock the body control module out of sync, which needs dealer-level software rather than a locksmith. We'll ask a few questions on the phone so we don't send you the wrong fix.

What customers say
"I cannot recommend Alec enough. My transit custom lock was not turning. I did not know Alec at this point and called another locksmith. To cut a long story short the other locksmith attempted a repair and then gave up, leaving me with a van I could no longer use. I called Alec who came out next day; he repaired the damage done by the other locksmith and custom made a replacement ignition barrel so one key still does the doors and the new ignition. I couldn't be more pleased. Price was very fair too!"
"Did the work at a 3rd of the price of the dealership and I'm sure to a higher quality, the work was quick and professional. Could not recommend more!"
"Absolutely spot on! After ringing about 15 different companies who said they couldn't help and one company even saying the series of my car doesn't exist I found smarttech who I contacted who could finally help! The next day he came out and I now have access and a new key to my car! Fast and efficient polite service! Highly recommend!!"
