Making the key
Same day for most vans • Discontinued Transit fobs in stock • Quote before we travel • Seven years in the trade
The van itself gives us everything we need: the lock tells us the cuts, and the immobiliser accepts a new chip.
From the reg we know the blank before leaving. At the van, a decoder works out each cut from the lock, and our machine cuts the blade on the spot. Transit blades, Vivaro flip keys and Sprinter keys are all cut this way.
Van key programming in Portsmouth teaches the van's immobiliser the new chip and couples the remote buttons. On most vans the lost key is wiped at the same time, so a finder can't start the van, which matters when there are tools in the back.

Availability
Usually, yes. Most vans get their lost van keys in Portsmouth sorted on the day of the call, anywhere on the island or on the mainland side at Cosham, Drayton and Farlington.
Calls are answered from 8am until 10pm Monday to Friday, and from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. Say it's a trade van when you ring, and we'll plan around your working day.

Your options
For a van with no key, the deciding factor is whether the van has to travel to get a new one.
A dealer can supply a key, but the van has to reach their workshop first, which with no key means a recovery truck and then a workshop booking. Our van comes to yours instead, so the only downtime is the visit itself. The exceptions are 2018-on Volkswagen Transporters and Mercedes Sprinters, and Vitos from mid-2013, with every key gone, which do need the dealer, and we'll tell you that on the phone.
Some national firms and booking websites take your call and pass the job to a subcontractor, with their own margin on top. Ring us and the person who prices the job is the one who turns up and cuts the key.

Pricing
The van, the type of key and whether a working one survives all shape the van key replacement cost in Portsmouth. We price it from the reg before setting off, and there's nothing to pay until the key is working.
A copy from a working key is the cheapest job; a full replacement with no key left costs more, because the lock is decoded and the security worked deeper. Every price is given before anything is taken apart; if one symptom could be more than one fault, you hear each possible price on the phone first, then we confirm at the vehicle. Keys are guaranteed for 12 months.

Vans we cover
Most common trade vans, with a couple of limits on the newest models.
Every Transit up to 2023, including the Custom and the Connect, is keyed at the van. The blue-button fob fitted to older Transits isn't made any more, but we keep them in stock, so Ford Transit key replacement in Portsmouth on an older van is still a single visit.
Vivaros of any year are covered; 2019-on models need a manufacturer PIN, bought using the V5C and photo ID. Trafics need the correct chip and a supported battery during programming. 2019-on Partners and Berlingos follow the PIN route, and both are known for ignition trouble too: see ignition repair in Portsmouth. Transporters and Sprinters are covered for lost keys up to the 2018 changeover, and Vitos to mid-2013, confirmed from the reg.
Across Portsmouth
Portsmouth's trade vans spend their days on the island's tight terraced streets and the industrial estates up towards Hilsea, and a lost key strands them in places a recovery truck struggles to reach.
We come to the van on site, outside a customer's house or in the yard. Replacement van keys in Portsmouth are cut there, van key programming in Portsmouth is done there, and the van drives off when we do.

Our work

FAQ
Yes, for most vans. We read the cuts from the lock and program a fresh chip to the van, so no original is needed. 2018-on Transporters and Sprinters, and Vitos from mid-2013, with every key lost are the exception, because only the dealer can add a key to those. Give us the reg and we'll confirm.
If more than one person drives the van, yes. Spare van keys in Portsmouth copied on the same visit cost much less than another lost-key job, and each is programmed as its own key, so one can be cancelled without affecting the others if it goes missing on a site.
A letter of authority from the business that owns it, plus photo ID. For a leased van, we need permission from the leasing company. For a van you own outright, the V5C and ID are enough. We won't cut a key without the right paperwork, which is exactly what you'd want if it were your van.
Usually. If the electronics still work, a split case or worn buttons can be replaced around them. If the remote has died, we'll supply and program a new fob, and for older Transits that's the blue-button type we keep in stock. Either way, it's done at the van.

What customers say
"I cannot recommend Alec enough. My transit custom lock was not turning. I did not know Alec at this point and called another locksmith. To cut a long story short the other locksmith attempted a repair and then gave up, leaving me with a van I could no longer use. I called Alec who came out next day; he repaired the damage done by the other locksmith and custom made a replacement ignition barrel so one key still does the doors and the new ignition. I couldn't be more pleased. Price was very fair too!"
"Did the work at a 3rd of the price of the dealership and I'm sure to a higher quality, the work was quick and professional. Could not recommend more!"
"Absolutely spot on! After ringing about 15 different companies who said they couldn't help and one company even saying the series of my car doesn't exist I found smarttech who I contacted who could finally help! The next day he came out and I now have access and a new key to my car! Fast and efficient polite service! Highly recommend!!"
